Save the Dinosaurs

Your children are sure to love working saving the dinosaurs by breaking them out of the ice! This dinosaur science activity is great for toddlers and preschoolers!

Materials Needed

Save the Dinosaurs!

Difficulty Level: Medium

Time Needed: 20 Minutes

Best done: Outdoors/Indoors

Mess Level: Medium

Hand hitting ice with hammer

Materials Needed

  • Cupcake Tin

  • Plastic Dinosaurs

  • Child's Hammer

  • Water

  • Freezer

    • Optional: towel, cookie sheet

Time to Experiment!

  • Place your dinosaurs into the cupcake pan (we suggest one in each opening). **To make it easier to get the ice out afterwards, you may want to place a cupcake liner in first.

  • Place the pan in the freezer until all of the dinosaurs are frozen solid

  • Let your child(ren) experiment with how to get the dinosaurs out of the ice! See what methods they come up with and encourage them to test various ways. (We suggest placing on a cookie sheet on a towel so that less water goes everywhere).

  • Some leading suggestions if needed:

    • ice melts when warm

    • ice can break (i.e. if you have a plastic hammer or a good spot to drop the ice – without it breaking anything else) **If they want to hit the ice we do suggest glasses so nothing gets into eyes)
