Materials Needed

  • Cones

  • Scooter

  • Old blankets, towels or pillows

Let's Play!

To begin, set up the course:

  • Place cones (or something similar) to mark off an area for "waddling"

  • Following this, place an indoor scooter. (If you don't have one you could also place a blanket down).

  • Finally, place pillows (or blankets/towels) down for "swimming."

  • Explain the set up to children playing:

    • The cone area is for waddling like a penguin. Penguins waddle because their legs are short and their feet are big!

    • Next up: the scooter area. Kids should lay on their bellys on the scooter and push themselves forward (to the next area or in a circle). *If you are using a blanket for this, they can lay on the blanket and do the same). When conditions are right, penguins love to toboggan in the snow. It allows them to move quickly (and sounds like fun)!

    • Finally the swimming area: Penguins  are fantastic swimmers! Lay on the blankets/pillows and do a swimming motion!

  • You can either have all of the kids work through the areas together, let kids work through each area on their own, or call out an area and have children race to it.
