Balloon pulling through hole in cardboard

Materials Needed

  • Piece of cardboard

  • Child-safe scissors

  • Coloring utensil

  • Balloon

  • Water

Time to Experiment!

  • For this science activity your child(ren) will learn about the octopus!

  • Some information about the octopus-they do not have bones which makes it easy for them to fit through and into small spaces allowing them to escape from predators.

  • To “experience” this: cut a small hole in the piece of cardboard. If desired, draw rocks onto the cardboard to add a better visual aspect.

  • Then draw an octopus face on the balloon. Try and pull the “octopus” through the hole. Does it go through easily? (It should because like the octopus, the balloon does not have anything inside so it can easily slide through).

  • Following this, try to add some firmer pieces to the balloon (to act as bones), now can you easily fit the octopus through? (It should not because there are firm pieces blocking it from passing).

  • -If desired you can further experience the octopus by using suction cup toys in water (like those that an octopus has) and experiment with how well they can stick to different surfaces!
