Materials Needed

  • Movement Scarves

  • Hula Hoops

  • Music

  • Soft Balls - optional

Let's Play!

  • To begin, spread out hula hoops (one per child playing) in the area you are playing in. (The further you can spread them, the better).

  • Give each child one movement scarf. We use scarves for this activity because they are far easier to catch than a ball.

  • Find some fun "Circus Music" to get in the zone. This youtube link is fun and is only about 3 minutes long.

  • Ask them to gently toss the scarf up and catch it.

  • Once they have mastered catching the scarf, hand them a second scarf to use.

    • As them to hold both in one hand and toss them up. Try to catch both.

    • Then, to make things more challenging, place one scarf in each hand and try to catch with that same hand (the scarf thrown  with their right hand should be caught with their right hand).

    • Finally, ask them to try and catch with the opposite hand. (Throw with the right, catch with the left and vice versa).

  • If they really feel like they have mastered the scarves (most likely older children) they can try and do the same with soft balls.
