Child hand in milk with green

Materials Needed

  • Bowl

  • Milk

  • Green Food Coloring

  • Cotton Swab

  • Dish Soap

  • Shallow Bowl

Time to Experiment!

  • Fill the shallow bowl with milk so that it covers the bottom of the bowl-not very deep.

  • Put a couple of drops of food coloring on top of the milk.

  • Have your child(ren) carefully dip the cotton swab into the dish soap-making sure it is covered all the way.

  • -Ask your child(ren) to predict what will happen when they dip the cotton swab into the milk.

  • Have your child(ren) carefully touch the top of the milk with the cotton swab.

  • Observe what happens!

  • *Explain that this works because milk contains a lot of protein and fat-the dish soap makes these two separate and spread. The green food coloring shows this!
